Your Route to the Internet

High Speed ISDN Access

General

ISDN is an acronym for "Integrated Services Digital Network." An ISDN line is a special kind of telephone line which is available in Champaign-Urbana and in many metropolitan areas. ISDN access to the Internet facilitates high-speed transfer of all sorts of information. ISDN's speed advantage is particularly noticeable when viewing images and downloadng sound, text, and video.

For an informative discussion of ISDN, visit An Introduction to ISDN.

Net66 ISDN accounts offer full Internet access from your personal computer or office network using an ISDN telephone line. There are two types of ISDN accounts: Dial-up and Centrex.

Dial-up vs Centrex ISDN Accounts

Dial-up ISDN accounts are accessed by placing an ISDN call to Net66 using your own ISDN phone line. A dialup connection is active as long as there is an ISDN call connected. Dial-up ISDN users incur Ameritech per-minute usage charges, just like a regular voice phone call. ISDN access requires a special ISDN modem, called a terminal adapter. Net66 recommends the 3com Impact.

Centrex ISDN accounts are accessed directly, via an extension of the Net66 phone system which is installed in your home or business*. Although a Centrex account uses the same high-speed Ameritech ISDN lines as a dial-up account, there are no Ameritech usage charges for a Centrex connection in the Net66 Centrex Service Area**. Since there are no Ameritech usage charges and since Net66 Centrex ISDN accounts include unlimited connect time, your home or business is free to remain connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Net66 set-up charge for Centrex ISDN accounts includes installation of Ameritech ISDN service in your home or business.

Centrex ISDN accounts use a router to connect your network with the Internet. Net66 recommends the Livingston ISDN Office Router.
